SELECTIONS DARASA LA SABA 2017 | More than 650,000 pupils selected to join form one for 2018 Academic year

1

THE selection of students joining Form One for the 2017/18 academic year was announced here on Thursday indicating an increase of nearly 24 per cent or 124,209 students.

Minister in the office of the President (Regional Administration and Local Governments) Mr Suleiman Jafo, announced that 650,862 students out of 662,035 qualifying students will be joining secondary education next year

“All 1,912 pupils with special needs who passed their final standard seven exams have also been selected to join secondary education,” Mr Jafo told a press conference in Dodoma Thursday.

According to the Minister, at least 11,173 pupils equivalent to 1.69 per cent were not selected during the first round. The Minister attributed the development to shortage of infrastructures notably classrooms in part of councils.

Figures from the ministry shows Lindi is in short of 170 classrooms, Mbeya (3,092), Rukwa (4,091), Manyara (1,268), Katavi (976) and Simiyu (1,576). As a result, the Minister said, some councils failed to allocate schools for its qualified pupils.

He named the councils and number of pupils left out as Lindi (170 pupils), Chunya (80), Mbeya DC (207), Mbeya CC (1,227), Mbarali (1,578), Kalambo (166), Nkasi (1,318) and Sumbawanga (1,054). Other councils, Sumbawanga MC (1,553), Babati (581), Hanang (687), Mpanda (262), Nsimbo (714) Bariadi (369) and Busega 1,207 pupils.

“The government aim is to ensure all the pupils who passed their exams continue with secondary education. I have directed all the Regional and District Commissioners to ensure space for these pupils who qualified to further their education,” he said.

The government was optimistic that after completing construction of classrooms in such regions, all qualifying pupils will be called to join their secondary education studies. Secondary schools are scheduled for opening next month and all students are required to report by January 8th.

SELECTIONS OF STUDENTS JOINING FORM-1

He warned over student dropout saying that all those who were selected are to complete their education without being interrupted.

TANZANIA faces acute shortage of Biomedical Engineers (BMEs)| “We need over 7,000 biomedical engineers,” said Mr Ole Nasha

0

Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Technology and Vocational Training William Ole Nasha, speaking here during his tour of educational institutions in the region, said the government was relying on technical training outfits like the Arusha Technical College (ATC) and Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology (DIT) to rescue the situation.

The biomedical engineer is a professional for design, manufacture, installation and maintenance of medical equipment in hospitals. But, many local hospitals have resorted to electrical and electronic engineers to man their biomedical equipment due to shortage of BMEs.

“We need over 7,000 biomedical engineers,” said Mr Ole Nasha, hinting that only the two colleges were trying to bridge the gap.

ATC has so far produced five batches of BMEs, with the total number of graduates in the field still less than 200. “All of the biomedical students here graduated with ordinary diploma levels but effective from this year, the college has started the bachelor degrees’ programmes and has enrolled 40 students, with 150 others pursuing the ordinary diploma,” the Head of Department, Engineer Nicodemus Msafiri said.

However, even the college itself seems to experience acute shortage of BME trainers, with only one qualified tutor at the campus, assisted with three others who had attended short courses. The college needs 15 qualified tutors to meet the demand and produce adequate graduates.

“In efforts to reduce the shortage of qualified tutors, we have sent abroad two BME lecturers for training; one is in China undertaking masters’ programme and another is pursuing PhD in the United States,” explained Engineer Msafiri. Biomedical engineering is the application of engineering principles and design concepts to medicine and biology for healthcare purposes, including diagnostic or therapeutic.

According to experts, BME seeks to close the gap between engineering and medicine, combining the design and problem solving skills of engineering with medical biological sciences to advance health care treatment, including diagnosis, monitoring and therapy.

The field of BME has recently emerged as its own study as compared to many other previously accomplished engineering fields. The recent World Health Organisation survey reported that nine in ten of all the countries studied, maintenance of their medical devices was problematic due to difficulties in getting qualified engineers.
