TRAGEDY: University student stabbed to death by boyfriend in guest house

2

SUMMARY

The two dated for more than three years

Witnesses say the suspect attacked the woman with a panga

A university student was murdered by her lover in a guest house in Bondo town(Kenya). Valerie Apondi Odhiambo (pictured), a student at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology is said to have been murdered by her boyfriend after a quarrel at dawn yesterday.

Witnesses say the suspect, Collins Oluoch Ogweno, a nurse at Nightingale Hospital in Kisumu attacked the woman with a panga. He has since been arrested. Apondi, an orphan from Rongo, Migori County was found dead after a commotion in their room at around 5am.

Friends of the deceased told The Sunday Standard that the two have been in a relationship for more than three years.

“The two had a child together and have been in constant conflict,” said a source.

According to a caretaker of the guest house Benson Onchiri, he booked the two in one their rooms at around 8pm.

“I later heard a commotion from the room and the female occupant was screaming for help,” said Onchiri. He alerted the police who rushed to the scene.

According to the deceased’s friend, the two spent some time outside the university before they moved to town. Bondo Deputy OCPD Robert Makau said they recovered a panga and suspected poisonous liquid at the scene.

“From the information that we’ve gathered, the suspect accused the deceased of unfaithfulness,” said Makau.

The body was moved to Bondo sub-county hospital mortuary while the suspect is being held by police. News of Apondi’s death was received with shock at her village in Kowuor in Rongo with relatives describing her as a bright and disciplined girl.

Apondi lost her father Joshua Owuor in 2004 and mother Margaret Odhiambo in 2007 while she was in primary school. Elector Akoth, a sister to the deceased said her elder sister was last at home during the repeat Presidential election in October.

“My sister was a good person who was loved by everyone in the family. She has struggled to complete her studies, we had very high expectations of her,” said Akoth.

Joel Owuor an uncle to Apondi, said she (Apondi) and her seven siblings were taken in by their stepmother Peninah Odhiambo after they were orphaned.
