Job Introduction
BBC Swahili is recruiting an Assistant Editor to join the bureau in Dar es Salaam. This is an exciting opportunity to join BBC Africa’s management during our expansion and introduction of six new language services, plus an enhanced TV and digital offer. You will be in charge of BBC Swahili radio and digital output produced in Tanzania.

Role Responsibility
Reporting to the Swahili Editor, your role is to oversee editorial operations in the Dar es Salaam bureau. You will be expected to provide creative leadership and vision to the team and developing the BBC Swahili strategy. You will manage a team of journalists and deputise for the Service Editor. You will take responsibility for the output (online, digital and social media), ensuring all content meets our editorial standards and is relevant to our audiences.



Are you the right candidate?
The successful candidate will have demonstrable experience in a senior journalistic role, with fluent Swahili and English language skills. You will have first class knowledge of the Tanzanian and wider East African political, economic and cultural environment, as well as the wider media market. You will have extensive editorial experience of online and digital, with the ability to develop and implement new approaches to programme structure and content. Experience of leading and developing a team of journalists, both locally and remotely, is important.
