In the 2002 census, the district\u2019s population was estimated at 187,428. Mkuranga (green) place in the Coast region.<br \/>\nThe district was established in 1995 from the Kisarawe district. Its area is 2,432 km\u00b2 and there is a 90-kilometer Indian Ocean coast.<\/p>\n<p>The seven coastal villages are hungubweni, Mpafu, Kerekese, Kisiju Pwani, Mdimni, Magawa and Kifumangao. The villages of Boza, Kuruti, Kwale and Koma are located on small islands in the sea not far from the coast.
