an 86-year-old grandmother has graduated from university with a doctorate – after leaving school at 15 with no formal qualifications and almost dying during her studies.
Peggy Styles completed an EdD – the educational equivalent of a PhD – earlier this year and graduates on Wednesday.
She becomes the oldest ever student to graduate from the University of Bristol.
Mrs Styles, from Failand, near Bristol, started her doctorate aged 78 and it has taken her eight years to complete her studies.
The widow overcame a bad kidney infection which left her fighting for her life around three years ago and led to her suspending her studies for 18 months while she battled back to good health.
Mrs Styles said: “I was so ill that I nearly died. I was in hospital for a month and had to learn to walk again.
“The university was absolutely super and agreed to suspend my studies until I felt better. I was determined to finish my doctorate.
